The exhibition of LIP’s London Villages Project opens on Monday 30th July and will run until Sunday 26th August inclusive. The official opening by Nick Raynesford MP for Greenwich and Woolwich will take place at the Private View on Thursday 2nd August.

The opening will also include the launch of The Book of The London Villages Project. The book gives an in-depth overview of how our photographers have engaged with ‘the idea of village’ and is an outstanding companion to the Project.

The exhibition & Private View will be held in the New Academic Building at Goldsmith College, Lewisham Way, New Cross SE14 6NW.

Private View for all LIP members: Thursday 2nd August 6pm to 8.30 pm

Opening hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 9pm; Saturday and Sunday 12pm to 4pm

Project Archive

A note

This archive of The London Villages Project contains the work of sixty-five participants. At one time over two hundred members of London Independent Photography were actively engaged with the Project but, for a variety of reasons, decided not to submit a final personal project.

The personal project consisted of a collection of up to twelve images from their year’s work. For the purposes of web and print publication each photographer was asked to nominate a ‘signature’ image — one that felt best, or most suitably, represented the ‘spirit’ of their work and-or the one that offered-up the best ‘first glance’ impact. Some felt that one image only was sufficient to represent their complete year’s work.

The photographers’ collections are represented here are, hereafter, to be taken as a moment in the life of a city, its random photographers and, perhaps, as indicative of the sensibility of those photographers working in one year at the beginning of a century.

As is the way of these matters, all will turn to dust; but not, we hope, just yet. There are many issues outstanding regarding photographic archives generally and others still in the early stages of debate concerning digital archives. Those of us with interests and concerns regarding the making and maintenance of archives must address these issues. Long-term community projects, of which the LVP serves as an introductory example, might have, as a central component, matters of archival concern and how the process of recording urban spaces and maintaining the results speaks to our apprehension of change and the use of archival material in our interpretation and transmission of that engagement and cognizance.
